Lyrics
Train shakin’ down my door, even louder than it was before
The pain is an imagined thing
But things don’t seem the way they used to be

Was it cruel? Yes, they choose to let it go
Injustice reigns, it’s still the same

Flying spaceships in the Autumn skies
Stray, glass whistles in the moon denied
I’ve seen the shadows walk across the stream
They fall just short of the golden dream

Fiction, fact, white and black, the difference minor
And so it goes, but I should know

Hard plays, loose pays
Figuring, what the hell, you only live once
He waits in the shadows, she continues to make up more lies
His hair is thining, his eyes gray
While here self-destruction goes on and on
He offers her the comfort she needs, but what she needs she denies

The train makes its schedule on time
And life continues on its normal bind
It’s written off as a passing thing
But things don’t seem the way they used to be

Was it cruel? Yes, they choose to let it go
Injustice reigns, end result the same
Within the rain there is only pain

Analysis: A rare song in the collection, in that it was built from an older recording of a defunct song called “Imaginary Flying Lizard Wings”, written and recorded in 1991. In the Spring of ’95, new lyrics (except for the bridge), vocals, bass, and keys were added to the base recording of acoustic guitar and drums to form “Used To Be”, a more advanced version of the original concept.

Whenever I’m Near You

Track 36  On  The Evolution of Noise  By  Wahray and Soul

Written by Ric Albano Song Length: 4:15

1995
Lyrics
I wanna tell ya ’bout fortune and glory
It has never been my story
I can’t help but love you even though I don’t want to
Your eyes are so blue, your smile so kind and it’s true
That I’ll never learn, no I’ll never learn

Not that I want to, you see, whenever I’m near you
I feel as though my hopelessness is gone
You make me feel as though I could never do wrong
I want you so bad, so bad that it’s driving me mad
But I’ll never learn, no I’ll never learn

Whenever I’m near you, I’m struck with desire
My mind and my heart and my soul catch on fire
I feel so high, just like when I was younger
Don’t want to get hurt but I’ve got such a hunger

To kiss you and hold you and never let go of you
I want so bad to tell you
But I fear the rejection that I might go through
If only once you’d show me that you’re not the perfect girl for me
Than I’d learn, yes maybe I’d learn

All I can do now is just dream about you
And wish, hope, and pray that these dreams will come true
Someday I may tell you, straight up with no riddles
If I could just hold you, I’s soon have a little

Of fortune and glory, a happily ending story
I can’t help but want you even though it’s not what I should do
And happiness has eluded me for such a long time
But now it’s my turn, finally it is my turn

Analysis: Armed with a brand new sequencer, I put together a series of songs with a bit more complex, albeit electronic. arrangements. I’ve always liked this one because it sounds simple but is a bit complex, combining a traditional rock pattern with some edgy augumentation.

The Difference Between

1995
Lyrics
I see your eyes, you’ve seen me cry
You know I’d do anything to be with you
But somehow we drifted apart and it broke my heart
I tried to talk to you one night
But we ended up getting into a big fight

I said things that I just didn’t mean
It was desperation that made me scream
The thought of losing you drove me mad
I just couldn’t cope with life without having what we had

Because you’re the girl who owns my heart even though we’re still apart
I hope you find the difference between what I say and what I mean

I used to see the love in your eyes
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul
I used to think that love couldn’t die
But apparently there was something that I just didn’t know

You ended it all much too fast and my heart, it shattered like glass
I shouted things that I soon would regret
Is there any way now we can forgive and forget?

So girl, I guess that is where we stand today
Can you forgive for being so cruel on that terrible day?
I’ll love you forever, until I die, and those words were never lies
Hope you find the difference between what I say and what I mean
Can you hear the difference between what I say and what I mean?
Can you feel the difference between what I say and what I mean?

Analysis: Perhaps the best pure pop song I ever wrote, this simple piano ballad about a breakup contains a pleasant melody and some high-end keyboard work in the arrangement.

Don’t Look Back

Track 34  On  The Evolution of Noise  By  Wahray and Soul

Written by Ric Albano Song Length: 5:55
Listen to the Song:
[audio:WAS/61-Don’tLookBack.mp3]
1993
Lyrics
Danger lurks in every corner, everyone is warned to beware
Something sparks inside her eyes as though she doesn’t really care
Fearless, she walks through the room

Songs echo the endless night, songs of bitter hard despair
She fights off the evil plight, strong revenge upon the dare
All alone, she conquers the gloom
Now it’s gone, yes it’s gone

A definite beginning, an uncertain end
The song of life goes on and on
A runaway train going around the bend
A purple-ish tomato and a shield of Tron
Sadly, they all exit the room

The obstacles of freedom no longer exist
Constructed by myself, with her help torn down
Shining days of glory, like sand in a the fist
The tighter that we squeeze, the faster it falls down
Madly, love has formed is cocoon
It goes on, on and on

Finally, no longer a memory
We two know, it is here for all plain to see
We’ve escaped the rude, the old, and the cold
Now we know the warm, the young, and the bold

Shacked up in a cottage way up in the hills
We exist, no longer slaves to commonplace
No longer do we worry about what we may have missed
Tearless, we live for today
Don’t look back, don’t look back

Don’t ya, don’t ya, don’t ever look back
Resist temptation, give history a smack
Make it a point to don’t ever look back
Don’t endear that sensation, it wasn’t that great in the past

Analysis: This song is a rarity of several fronts. It was my first and only attempt to make a recording outside the confines of “Rathole” studios, as I brought my equipment to an apartment where I lived to record much of this (it was later finished at Rathole). Also, it is the only record made during a 20 month stretch from March 1992 until November 1993. Musically, it breaks through with all electronic instruments for the first, something that will be more widely adopted towards the end of Wahray and Soul.

Run

Track 33  On  The Evolution of Noise  By  Wahray and Soul

Written by Ric Albano Song Length: 3:31
Listen to the Song:
[audio:WAS/57-Run.mp3]
1992
Lyrics
I came across you just the other day and said “hi”
But you just acted like you’re deaf in the ears and passed by
It’s me. not you, who should be the one who is made
Won’t take the blame for what you’ve done
It’s too bad, I don’t care anymore

Everytime you have a problem you run
You finally found out that life is not always fun
It’s hard, sometimes happiness ain’t the only thing in the cards
But when things just aren’t going your way
You can’t pick up and run away
You’ve got to step up to the challenge of everyday

I came across you on a fair, warm night in the street
You looked much better, alright and back on your feet
But then the rain started pouring down and you ran
You probably ran to a warm and dry desert land
I don’t care anymore

Everytime you have a problem you run
You finally found out that life is not always fun
It’s hard, sometimes happiness ain’t the only thing in the cards
But when things just aren’t going your way
You can’t pick up and run away
you’ve got to step up to the challenge of everyday

Everytime you have a problem you run
I don’t care anymore

Analysis: A cool pop/rock song with a nice guitar riff, this song harkens back to a forgotten past of Wahray and Soul, as sort of a guitar-driven island in a sea of piano and synths. There’s even a brief “middle section” where just about everything was improvised before returning to the well structured main theme. A new synth backing track was added in 1993 as well as new lyrics written but never used.
