Lyrics
I want to tell you a little story about a Hampshire man
His name was Johnny Joe
He lived in a run-down White Mountain shack
And he kept a pet black crow
He used to hunt bear in the cool Maine woods
With his friend ole’ Bob McGee
But Johnny was wildest of all the Hampshire men
When it came to shootin’ bear he was cool, yes indeed

Wild, wild child

Now, Johnny had a girl named a-Nanci Lynn
She was cute in her own way
But she was about as faithful as an ole’ rattlesnake
When she didn’t get her own way
Johnny came home from work early one day
And found sweet Nanci and ole’ Bob rolling in bed
The sight of his girl and his best friend there
Made Johnny Joe lose his head

Wild child, wild child

Johnny pulled his gun down off the rack
And he gave ole’ Bob three seconds to run
Bob stood there and tried to reason with his friend
But Johnny didn’t want to hear it and he shot the gun
Bob fell to the floor like an ole’ Grizzly Bear
Nanci went to the phone and she called Sheriff Sam
And Johnny ran, he ran

Sheriff Sam charged Johnny with “murder one”
And immediately out out an A.P.B.

Johnny took off to the woods of Maine
Where he used to hunt the bear, so he knew the terrain
Sheriff Sam took with him fifty men
To capture Johnny Joe and be elected again
Now the hunter was the hunted in the cold Maine woods
He wished he’d made amends with those bears he used to shoot
If Johnny could, he would

Sheriff Sam found Johnny dead in the woods on a cold December day
It seemed a grizzly bear was trying to hibernate
And Johnny invaded his terrain
So, as it turns out, Sheriff Sam has got his re-election
And the bears have their revenge
And everybody’s happy but an-ole’ Johnny Joe
Because he’ll never go a-huntin’ again

Wild child, wild child

Analysis: This was originally intended to be a mocking song about a man named “Johhny Rowe” who was trying to pick up my one day girl by bragging how he hunted bear up in Maine. However, it turned into a bit of a memorial song after my cousin, Johnny Joe, died of a heart attack on October 3rd, 1991. The music is simple and the lyrics are story-telling with some effects added to the vocals during the 2003 mixdown.

King Of the Hill

Lyrics
I see the picture now of the place in the woods
Where the battle was won and the swords are held high
To the red and bloody sky, I didn’t mean it
I just was crowned too young by you all to be the king of the hill
The tower’s gloom staring down at me know
I try to escape from it’s shadow, I try to break its black cloud
But I just break down, now fall down down on my knees
Beg of you, dear Lord, your forgiveness please

Red and bloody sky, to you all I cry, I didn’t mean it
I just was crowned too young by you all to be the king of the hill
My experience is much less than some
I lose in spars to drunken old bums
Just who am I to be your new king?
I waste my time on trivial things

My choice is simply this; to rise or fall
This is my call, my choice, my hopes, my dreams
Ambition to be the king of the hill
It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it
Noone else will so I just said “screw it”
It’s a chance of a life
To have strength and might and some strong insights
I am the the king of the hill!
You will obey my will!

Analysis: A snappy, bass-driven song with almost a blues pattern were it not for the injection of the descending riff at the end of the first bar. This song marks a return to the electric guitar with some nice sonic tapestries and an interesting lyric, written after I had a tarot card reading and drew the “tower”, which symbolizes much power to come but also corruption.

You Drive Me Mad

Lyrics
Feeling like such a fool, a fool that was made by you
Humiliated by your acts, wondering what it is I lack
You came to me scared and afraid of cleaning up the mess that you made
I said that I understand and promised that I’d lend a hand

But then when my back is turned
You lit the match to which I was burned
I asked you a simple why but still you continued to lie
So now very soon you’ll see the revenge which will come from me
You should’ve been straight from the start
But instead you went and broke my heart

You drive me mad, you drive me so damn crazy
Feel like I’ve been had, I’m so mad over you

You needed me, I needed you
What happened? I reaaly wish that I knew
So sad to see you leaving me
I can’t believe this nightmare has come true

You drive me mad, you drive me so damn crazy
Feel like I’ve been had, I’m so mad over you

I’m sure that soon the day will come
When you’ll be crawling back on your knees
Although its course may change sometimes
The rivers always do reach the sea

You make me mad, you make me so damn crazy
Feel like I’ve been had, I’m so mad over you

Someday soon, not long from now
You’ll be forced to take a sacred vowel
Your fakeness will release all your friends
Alone you will be left to fend
You’ll think the whole damn world is wrong
You’ll beg someone to hear your sad song
You’re choosing the hardest way to see
That you can’t find no better than me

You drive me mad, you drive me so damn crazy
Feel like I’ve been had, I’m so mad over you

Someday soon, not long from this day
You’ll be forced to find a better way
Your fakeness will release all your friends
Alone you will be left to fend
You’ll think the whole damn world is wrong
You’ll beg someone to hear your sad song
You’re choosing the hardest way to see
That you can’t find no better than me

Analysis: The last of a year-long deluge of acoustic-powered songs that started the previous summer, this song gets a bit ambitious with the chord changes and musical tangents. Still, it is fun and interesting.

Lyrics
Baby, I love your smile, yes it’s true
Inside it drives me wild and savage too
In harmony with your style, old yet new
Baby, I love your smile, yes I do

Baby, I love your smile
Baby, you drive me wild

I just met you today, never seen you before
But with every word you say I want you more and more
And everything you do makes my blood start flowing
I’d love to be your fool, I’m sure by now it’s showing

Baby, I love your smile
Baby, you drive me wild

Your skin is soft as silk, your breasts are firm and large
Your voice is soft as milk or two 12-string guitars
Yes, two 12-string guitars

Your eyes could cut through stones, your hair is long and brown
But most of all I jones your smile that breaks me down
And everything you do makes my blood start flowing
I’d love to be your fool, I’m sure by now it’s showing

Baby, I love your smile
Baby, you drive me wild

Your skin is soft as silk, your breasts are firm and large
Your voice is soft as milk or two 12-string guitars
Yes, two 12-string guitars

Analysis: This song was written as sort of a joke but has held up over the years to be one of my favorites from early ’91. The driving acoustic riffs and time-stop changes, plus different time measurements, make it a very interesting listen musically.

Lyrics
Pressure building high today
You’ve got to shape up if you want to stay
And one more thing, by the way
You’ve got to be perfect if you want to stay

We’ve seen alot of your kind
We may be old but we’re sure not blind
We reallt don’t care if you are in a bind
We just don’t want you wasting our time

And when you find that one big break
After taking all that you can take
We’ll burn you down at the stake
We’ll count our profits while we watch you bake

And when we see you’re not yet dead
We’ll plant more junk in your head
We’ll beat you until we see blood red
We’ll make sure that you’re dead

Pressure building high today
I’ve got to shape up if I want to stay
And one more thing, by the way
Fuck you asshole, I’m leaving today

Analysis: This is a nice little revenge song, written shortly after leaving a bad job. The song contains vulgarities (even after some were edited out of the final mix) and, perhaps, the best harmonica playing I’ve ever done.
